Heather Bottoms | She Devil Delights
What is your business, and what do you make?
My business is She Devil Delights and we specialize in gourmet condiments – all containing an element of chili. Our signature product, Hellish Relish is a moreish mixture of fresh seasonal chili peppers and onions, cooked up with mustard seed, vinegar, salt and a sprinkle of sugar (or Xylitol™) to create a sweet and sassy taste sensation that you can enjoy on almost anything OR straight out of the jar!
This holiday season we have introduced our Crackin’ Cranberry chutney, a mixture of B.C. fresh cranberries, cranberry pear vinegar, chili peppers, (sugar or Xylitol), walnuts, orange zest, vanilla, cinnamon and lemon. It is served best with Turkey, Chicken, baked brie or cream cheese and we have sold out at both shows we have introduced this to!
How did you get started in this business?
Hellish Relish is my grandmother’s recipe. I used to make it for friends as Christmas gifts but the demand grew so much I had to start producing more and more!
Is this a full time job for you?
Our first jar of Hellish Relish hit the shelves in March of this year and we now boast 34 locations across B.C. and A.B. It’s become a full time job launching this and I am loving it!
What is your first memory of making something?
I would have been 3 or 4yrs old helping Mom and Grandma with the Christmas baking. Bachelor Buttons were always my favorite and I recall burning my mouth trying to sneak one fresh out of the oven. I had to develop more covert operations if I was to get some of that deliciousness before the holidays (don’t you remember when a month was a lifetime??)
What are your favorite and least favorite things about being a craft fair vendor?
My favorite thing about being a vendor is meeting so many different people – both those that attend as well as other vendors.
My least favorite thing is sounding like a parrot all day (repeating myself over and over) so I try and shake it up from time to time so I don’t get bored!! LOL
What is the biggest compliment you’ve ever received about your work?
“OMG this is addictive! We LOVE it!”
Not very often you wish to encourage addiction to anything……
What is one holiday tradition in your family?
We do a sleigh ride on Boxing Day – full blown with Clydesdale horses and all, and enjoy a potluck dinner with friends following.
What was the last gift you gave someone?
A new set of dentures! Being able to properly chew your food is key to good nutrition and digestion!
If you could be a superhero, what would you want your super powers to be?
Funny you should ask! I’m working hard at being a Wine Whisperer – I’m learning how to make wine disappear – living in one of Canada’s leading wine areas, I’m getting pretty good at it!
If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?
What is she up to now?
