Vendor Spotlight – Something Sweet Creative Studio

Tina Ihas | Something Sweet Creative Studio

What is your business, and what do you make?
My business is called Something Sweet Creative Studio.  I make owls, whales, owl bags, regular bags, zipper pouches, wallets, and coffee cozies from upcycled textiles, mostly clothing.

How did you get started in this business?
I have a niece who loves owls.  I decided one Christmas to make her an owl bag from an old tweed coat I had saved to make myself a purse – I had not yet decided what I wanted to do for me so I cut it up.  Shortly after Christmas she said to me that she had been getting loads of compliments and that I should make more. So I did.

In the spirit of recycling, they were all made from clothing.  I decided that I wanted to waste as little as I could so I made the stuffies. The first batch was all the same size and was given to family.  The second was in 2 sizes and batch sold like crazy. I now do 6 sizes and a variation of the mid-size that has wings holding a baby or two.

Is this a full time job for you?
I wish!  I sew about 20 hours a week and work for a pay cheque about 30.

What is your first memory of making something?
My Mum is really creative and a very talented seamstress and a master crocheted – she dabbles in everything.  I do not really remember not making stuff.

What are your favorite and least favorite things about being craft fair vendor?
My favorite thing is receiving the compliment of a purchase.  When someone spends their hard earned money on something I made, it feels so good – every time!

My least favorite thing…  I do not really have one.  I truly love it. My friend that always comes to help and I always have fun – slow or super busy – we always make the best of it.

What is the biggest compliment you’ve ever received about your work?
People often comment of how much attention I pay to detail. I pride myself on my workmanship so the recognition means a lot to me.

What is one holiday tradition in your family?
We have loads of Holiday traditions.  I have a large extended family that all lives near me, we all tend to be pretty busy all year long but spend a lot of time together during the Holidays and I really love that.

What was the last gift you gave someone?
I gave a co-worker who was leaving (my day job) a huge hanging basket for her garden.

If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?
I would like the power to heal – myself and others.  It would save a lot of worrying about my kids.

Do you believe in Bigfoot?
Of course I do!
