Christie Martel | The House Phoenix
What is your business, and what do you make?
I make modern macramé hangings. Bohemian inspired window hangings, room dividers, door hangings and wedding backdrops
How did you get started in this business?
I’ve always loved to create art using fiber. My mom used to make macramé plant holders and I loved how they hung all over the house when I was little. A year and a half ago I started listing all types of fiber artwork in my etsy shop. I observed what people liked the most and what they were purchasing most. This etched my path to specializing in macramé curtains.
Is this a full time job for you?
Yes it is a full time job. I am fortunate to have a partner who absorbs half the work and as such we can both work half time towards the shop.
What is your first memory of making something?
I’m not sure. Nothing that stands out to me. I guess I spend so much time focusing on the now and future that I don’t look back often.
What are your favorite and least favorite things about being craft fair vendor?
I’m not sure this is my first one.
What is the biggest compliment you’ve ever received about your work?
I love when people across the world in a place I’ve never been tell me that the curtain we customized together looks amazing in their space.
What is one holiday tradition in your family?
Huge stockings full of little gifts.
What was the last gift you gave someone?
A Citrine tower lamp to my dad for his birthday.
