Vendor Spotlight – Simple Pleasures

Jan Brown | Simple PleasuresSimple-Pleasures

What is your business, and what do you make?
I make 100% pure beeswax candles, all natural scented candles and essential oils.

How did you get started in this business?
I started making candles 15 years ago when I was not well and attended yoga.  Our instructor would not burn paraffin and was looking for beeswax.  I thought to myself “I could do this”.

Is this a full time job for you?
This is strictly a hobby business catering to the Winter season when everyone loves the comfort of a burning candle.

What is your first memory of making something?
Living up north we were across from a park with Fir trees.  My friend and I went in the fall and picked up all the small cones, baked them and glued them to a Styrofoam ring for Christmas.  That was in 1979 and I still have the wreath!

What are your favorite and least favorite things about being craft fair vendor?
I love the process.  I do everything myself from making, packaging and labeling the candle.  Always researching for ideas, making all my marketing material.  I love meeting the people that share the love of being creative.  It is sometimes hard to deal with Customers who do not appreciate the time put into a handmade item.  I am never good with bartering.

What is the biggest compliment you’ve ever received about your work?
Repeat customers!  When I go to shows and a customer comes up to my booth beaming and excited to see I am back.

What is one holiday tradition in your family?
When we lived up north we would bundle up with a thermos of Coco and take the kids to find that ‘perfect’ Christmas tree.  They always look better from the road!!

What was the last gift you gave someone?
A teddy bear hand made by a crafter I met at a show.  My mother passed away and I had teddy bears made from her fur coat, one for each of her daughters.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
We were in Australia and in a gum tree forest looking for Koalas. I was getting bit on my legs and when I looked down I was standing in an ant hill and they were quickly moving up my body.  All over my shoes, pants – took my husband and I quite a while to get them all off.

What song has been stuck in your head this week?
Cheerleader
